About Legionella
Legionella is a potentially fatal form of pneumonia which can affect anyone. It tends to pose a greater threat for older people, smokers, heavy drinkers, anyone suffering respiratory or kidney disease, diabetes, lung or heart disease and anyone with a compromised immune system.
There are 34 species of legionella which is the cause of the deadly Legionnaires' disease. Although Legionella is widespread in natural water sources it can also live in man made systems such as bathrooms and kitchens posing a great health hazard if it goes undetected.
Legionella thrives in water at temperatures between 20-45 degrees centigrade. It can cause an infection if contaminated water is inhaled in the form of fine droplets or an aerosol spray. Legionella can be present in systems where water is stored or recycled and any water source which is contaminated with rust, sludge, scale, organic matter or bio films can provide the perfect environment for the legionella bacteria to multiply.
